This material is part of the video "VINTAGE DRUMMING"

All the material present here is the result of more than a decade of careful studies on the early drummers and their styles.

These are rhythms and functional phrases that I still use in my presentations with traditional jazz bands in São Paulo, mainly with the Tito Martino Jazz Band.

This work was inspired by the following drummers:

My first authoral-experimental album, made with drums, metallophone and synthesizers.

ABOUT THE ALBUM (hear the musics with headphones)

TEMA 1: 6/8 with simple, loose melody that keeps the natural balance of this time. Tried to play more aggressively in a kind of jazz-rock using phrases and solos in concert-tones inspired by Casey Scheuerell with Jean Luc Ponty, Neil Peart, Billy Cobham etc...

TEMA 2: A topic that it works like the "conversation" between the glockenspiel and drums. The glockenspiel "question" and the drums "answers" until both come together in a quick shot beat on the hi hat, inspired in my idol Jo Jones.

TEMA 3: When I got this melody, trying to get something with a more tribal African "spirit." In tried to make a rhythm marking the "key" on the bass drum and the left hand with caxixi. The right gives the beat in a constant "free hand" roll inspired by Johnny Rabb.

TEMA 4: On 11/8, is almost a waltz. I tried to work harder climate and experience more sound. I called my friend Daniel Tucci to make a solo viola, and put effects to create an unusual atmosphere.

TEMA 5: In 5/4, was one of the first songs I created. It was inspired by my idol Joe Morello.

TEMA 6: This is a more experimental subject, 2 parts, where I tried to mix jazz-swing with synthesizer. Further, it develops into a kind of pyrotechnic march in 3/4 which use one-hand-roll with the left hand and attacks the "bells" with the right, then walking to the face "concert tones" with sound effects.

TEMA 7: Fear candidly inspired by the samba-beats of my idols Edison Machado, Milton Banana and Wilson das Neves. Begins with a primitive tambourine along the nice voices of Chris Starr, Claudia Bock and Silvana Ponzio. Then forwards it to the glockenspiel and drums, culminating in a kind of rhythmic ground where I in their midst "where hand roll" with the left and syncope in cowbells and cascara, with the right.

TEMA 8: Baião mood with 2 times. The first very slow and dragged continues until fade with lightweight double keyboard background. Then breaking the silence enter a energic bea with cowbells twice the progress on "growing". Finish the song with drums alone in a triangle inspired beat by playing with the right hand between the hi-hat and greek cymbal.

TEMA 9: In 9/8, perhaps along with the "Track 6" is the most experimental of the disc. Symple groove, with emphasis on climate futuristic synthetizer, inspired on the sound of "Nerve" from Jojo Mayer, as well as time on 9/8 was inspired by the sound of Mahavishnu Orchestra.

TEMA 10: Single theme played entirely with brushes, and last music of the session record (all on the same day. exception TEMA 1 recorded 2 weeks before) this is a light and ethereal theme. The battery was ending ... lol

Neste 2o album de Metalodrum comecei a experimentar livremente com sintetizadores e idéias incomuns.
Deixei o processo de criação mais solto para tentar expandir meus horizontes sonoros.
Por isso, optei em gravar em meu home-studio, para testar as coisas com mais calma.
Destaque para as 5 faixas da Suite no final, onde toquei bateria e metalofone ao mesmo tempo, me forçando a mudar a forma de e compor e tocar (tive que usar a técnica freehand de Johnny Rabb em várias partes).

METALODRUM 4

I composed this album with the intention of testing ideas fusing the old jazz drumming style (inspired by Chick Webb, Ray Bauduc, Sidney Catlett and Gene Krupa), with experimental melodies and futuristic synthesizers, inspired by the movie Blade Runner.

I used a 26" bass drum with animal drum head; trapset (cowbells, woodblock and greeko cymbal); hi-hat; a crash-ride and a kind of china-type cymbal. No toms or side-drums. This allows me to get closer to the old sound.

Compus este álbum experimental com o intuito de testar ideias fundindo o estilo de bateria do jazz antigo (que é minha principal influência, inspirado em Chick Webb, Ray Bauduc, Sidney Catlett e Gene Krupa), com melodias experimentais e sintetizadores futuristas, inspirados pelo filme Blade Runner.

Eu usei um bumbo de 26" com pele animal com trapset (cowbells, woodblock e greeko cymbal); chimbal; um ride/crash e um prato de efeito, estilo china. Sem toms nem surdo. This allows me to get closer to the old sound.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM:

In this fifth METALODRUM album, i believe i got very close to the sound that I always sought when I created this project.
The name 'Metalodrum' (metallophone + drums) synthesizes the concept of this work, which is experimental and seeks to explore 2 different sound poles, with the noise drums and the subtlety of the metallophone linked by some synthesizers to reinforce the atmosphere.

Metalodrum's first album was recorded in 2014 and I think it was an interesting record. The following albums, were more a search for the expansion and exploration of this sound, where I tested many ideas, mainly adding more the synthesizer.

But in this album here, more mature, i found the music that I started to sketch in 2014.

Neste quinto álbum de METALODRUM, acredito ter chegado bem próximo da sonoridade que busquei, quando criei este projeto.

O nome, Metalodrum (metalofone+bateria) sintetiza o conceito deste trabalho, que é experimental e busca mesclar 2 diferentes polos sonoros, tendo, de um lado, o peso dos tambores e de outro a sutileza do metalofone. Isso tudo mesclado com sintetizadores que reforçam alguns climas e melodias.

O primeiro álbum Metalodrum foi gravado em 2014 e acho-o um trabalho interessante. Os álbuns seguintes são mais uma exploração sobre as possibilidades sonoras que este projeto poderia trazer, onde testei muitas ideias, principalmente adicionando mais sintetizador.

Mas neste álbum aqui, mais maduro, acho que cheguei ao som que comecei a esboçar no início de 2014.
Espero que gostem.

This experimental music was composed by Daniel Tucci with the legendary Buchla synthesizer, created in the 1960's by Donald Buchla, on the west coast of the United States, while his contemporary, Robert Moog, developed on the east coast, his Moog that became famous in the hands of Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, among other progressive rock legends of the 1970s.

Although the Moog has gained the spotlight, the Buchla brings a mysterious and psychedelic sound texture.

We tried to preserve an organic, natural and vintage sound in both, the buchla and the drums.
No effects have been added to this recording.

SOBRE O ÁLBUM (por Eliseu Paranhos)

Freak, o álbum-conceitual, começou a nascer no início dos anos noventa do século passado quando a sua primeira canção foi composta. Tomou forma quando a banda foi formada - no ano 2000 - no instante em que dois amigos de infância que experimentavam a mistura de ritmos brasileiros com rock encontraram um provocador - que não era um grande admirador deste estilo barulhento - e um garoto com cara e jeito de “Beatle” extemporâneo.

Paranhos, Penov, Ponzio e Miano criaram a banda, gravaram algumas canções, mas nenhum destes registros transformou-se em CD.

Treze anos depois o álbum emerge com as canções mais sombrias do quarteto, como se, finalmente, com o distanciamento temporal, fosse possível lançar luz sobre as tristezas, decepções, desilusões e amarguras daqueles primórdios intensos e belos, compreendidos entre 2000 e 2002.

Pensado como um álbum conceitual, Freak acompanha 14 horas e dezesseis minutos – do entardecer ao nascer do sol - de um personagem que não se apresenta pelo nome, mas pelas emoções extremadas.
Diferentemente de “Journey to the Centre of the Earth”, de Rick Wakeman (que lança mão de um narrador para nortear o ouvinte) ou de “2112”, do Rush (cuja música com mais de 20 minutos forma um único núcleo dividido em partes para contar uma saga), Freak alinhava oito canções que espelham a alma de seu personagem, como num monólogo formado por partes e músicas distintas e independentes e oito vinhetas que apontam o local, a hora e o estado emocional desse personagem.

Frágilidade, peso, experimentação, samba, baião, bossa e muito rock’n’roll mesclam-se nesta longa jornada que vai da solidão ao silêncio. Freak-out !
